November Gardening Tips

Tanglewood Garden Club Horticulture Report from Chair Kay Thibeaux

Now is the time to plant those cool season bedding plants. November is the most active month for planting beds of annuals. The most popular and successful annuals are cyclamen, dianthus, ornamental kale, pansies, Sweet alyssum.

It is bulb planting time as well. Blooming bulbs should go in as soon as possible in order to have to establish and get ready for spring blooming. You should not plant tulips or hyacinths until the end of December or early January,

Because our winters are relatively mild, roses do not go dormant. Other than deadheading, no pruning is necessary now.

If you are interested in vegetables at this time of year, you have a lot of options. You might want to try beets,
cabbage, carrot, collard, kale, lettuce mustard, onion, radish, spinach, shallot or turnip. When planted early, lettuce is very productive in the cool season garden.

Last but not-least, you might want to start looking at your indoor that you have had outside during the summer. Start transitioning them back into your home environment. Clean the pots and check the soil. You might want to add some fresh potting soil.
